Capitol raised a few eyebrows when they signed indie stalwarts the Decemberists. There’s nothing blatantly commercial about the Portland quintet, from Colin Meloy’s quavery voice and hyper-literate lyrics to the band’s wide-ranging music, which encompasses baroque pop, prog rock, and dozens of other styles. Then again, he did once sing, “I was made for the stage,” and those who’ve seen the group l…

 Albert Dock

Albert Dock

$115.22

The Albert Dock is a complex of dock buildings and warehouses in Liverpool, England. Designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick, it was opened in 1846, and was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood. As a result, it was the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world. At the time of its construction the Albert Dock was considered a revolutionary docking system because ships were loaded and unloaded directly from the warehouses. Two years after it opened it was modified to feature the world’s first hydraulic cranes. Due to its open yet secure design, the Albert Dock became a popular store for valuable cargoes such as brandy, cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory and sugar. However, despite the Albert Dock’s advanced design, the rapid development of shipping technology meant that within 50 years, larger, more open docks were required, although it remained a valuable store for cargo. During the Second World War, the Albert Dock was requisitioned by the Admiralty serving as a base for boats of the British Atlantic Fleet. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941.

Excerpt: SS Algol (T-AKR 287) is an Algol class vehicle cargo ship that is currently maintained by the United States Maritime Administration as part of the Ready Reserve Force (RRF). She was built by Rotterdamsche D.D.Mij N.V. in Rotterdam, Netherlands, for Sea-Land Service, Inc. and named MV Sea-Land Exchange. Due to her high operating cost, Sea-Land Exchange was sold to the United States Navy in October 1981 as USNS Algol (T-AK-287). Conversion began on 13 October 1982 at National Steel and Shipbuilding in San Diego, California. Her cargo hold was redesigned into a series of decks connected by ramps so vehicles can be driven into and out of the cargo hold for fast loading and unloading. She was also fitted with two sets of two cranes; one set located at midship capable of lifting 35 tons, and another set located aft capable of lifting 50 tons. She was delivered to the Military Sealift Command in 1984 as USNS Algol (T-AKR 287). When not active, Algol is kept in reduced operating status due to her high operating cost. If needed, she can be activated and ready to sail in 96 hours. In 1984, Algol was the first Fast Sealift Ship to take part in a European exercise when she took part in the NATO exercise, Operation REFORGER. Algol took part in the Persian Gulf War in 1990. Along with the other seven Algol class cargo ships, she transported 14 percent of all cargo delivered between the United States and Saudi Arabia during and after the war. In October 1998, Algol was activated to carry disaster relief supplies and equipment to Puerto Rico and other nearby islands following the aftermath of Hurricane Georges. In early 2003, Algol was activated to take part in Operation Iraqi Freedom. On 1 October 2007, Algol was transferred to the United States Maritime … More:

Excerpt: Banana, Democratic Republic of the Congo – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The port of Banana consists of one wharf of 75 m and depth 5.18 m, with two small cranes for cargo handling, and a few small jetties. The port has an oil terminal 4 km further upriver, to which tankers discharge while at anchor in the creek. The terminal has a quite separate road access east of Muanda. There are no facilities in Banana apart from the port, since these are provided by the much larger town of Muanda, where the nearest airport is located. There is no rail link. The town was developed as a port in the 19th century, largely as part of the Slave trade. Henry Morton Stanley arrived at Banana in 1879 at the start of an exploratory expedition funded by Léopold II of Belgium. Following the Conference of Berlin (1884-85) the European powers recognized Léopold’s claim to the Congo basin, and in a ceremony (1885) at Banana, the king announced the establishment of the Congo Free State, headed by himself, beginning the period of European colonization. Banana was the main Belgian naval base of the Congo until independence in 1960. The bitter civil wars of the 1990s reached Banana, however details are scarce. One CNN report in 1998 records a battle between Kabila loyalists and Rwandan-backed rebels. The town reported fell to the rebels and two foreign employees of the Chevron oil company were captured. … More: http://booksllc.net/?id=540154

 Clarendon: Landscape of Kings

Clarendon: Landscape of Kings

$134.64

From the time of Henry I onwards the medieval kings of England had a country retreat: a place to forget the burdens of government, to meet with mistresses and to indulge their passion for hunting. Tom Beaumont James and Christopher Gerrard tell the story of this great royal landscape, the largest deer park in the medieval kingdom, from the Palaeolithic through to the present day. They paint an evocative picture of Clarendon’s medieval hunts and of the royal court; in 1289 Queen Eleanor received in the Palace the heads of two cranes, captured by gyrfalcons. After its medieval apogee, Clarendon went through a further transformation, into a private country estate. Aided by maps, line drawings and beautiful photography, the reader is able to explore a place of great resonance in English history, and chart its changes through time.

Chapters: Albany Pump Station, Trans World Entertainment, Creighton Manning Engineering, Nxivm, Clough Harbour, Albany Port Railroad, Albany Records. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Albany Pump Station – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The pumphouse building complex is part of Quackenbush Square, a small pedestrian mall area named for the nearby Quackenbush House, one of the oldest buildings in Albany. It is located just off Broadway, on the east side of the street just north of, and visible from, the offramp that carries northbound traffic on US 9 from the Dunn Memorial Bridge and Interstate 787 to Clinton Avenue in the city. Its main block is a two-story four-by-four-bay brick building witha hipped roof shingled in slate. Large elliptically-arched windows, doubled on the second story, fill the west (front) facade. They are trimmed with brick lintels, keystones and stone sills, separated by broad pilasters. A large red sign saying “Albany Pump Station” is at the top of the facade, with “Brewpub and Restaurant” in smaller letters beneath. A later northern extension is similar. To the south is a two-story brick building used as stables when originally constructed, with rounded windows in that section. A narrow extension protrudes from the north. Inside, little remains of the original use or equipment. Renovations to create the restaurant, on the east side of the building, retained its industrial character but opened the interior space to create 40-foot (12 m) ceilings. Two 20-ton (18-tonne) cranes were retained and used to hoist the brewery’s serving tanks to their current location. The Albany Heritage Area Visitors Center, a gift shop and the Henry Hudson Planetarium are located along the south facade, on Quackenbush Square. Albany’s water supply system … More:

The sandhill, most often seen, is within easy reach of bird-watchers in the center of the continent. Less visible is the whooping crane, struggling back from near extinction. Paul Johnsgard follows these elegant birds through a year’s cycle, describing their seasonal migrations, natural habitats, breeding biology, call patterns-angelic to the bird-lover’s ear-and fascinating dancing. His knowledge of them transcends natural history, covering their importance in religion and mythology. Paul A.
