Design City Tokyo (Interior Angles Series)

Design City Tokyo (Interior Angles Series)

$85

Since the late 1980s, Tokyo has gained an unrivalled reputation worldwide for being at the very cutting edge of the international design scene. Despite the downturn in the Japanese economy in the mid 1990s, interior design has thrived, fuelled by a rapid turnover in consumer trends and the pressure on urban space. For retail and entertainment venues design is a potent tool, proving itself to be an essential aid in the perpetual jostle for customers and market share. In the last few years, the design stakes have heightened rather than diminished. International companies have also joined the fray by investing heavily in signature architecture in the city. In 2001, the Renzo Piano Building Workshop completed the Japanese headquarters for Hermès in Tokyo and, in 2003, Herzog de Meuron captured the attention of the world’s press with its impressive glass building for Prada in Roppongi.Design City Tokyo features the latest stylish interior design projects in the city. As well as restaurants, bars, shops, offices and homes, it includes a male beauty parlour, a disco for the over 40s and Kengo Kuma’s new temple. The projects range from the internationally renowned to hidden ‘backstreet’ gems. The author’s insider knowledge of Tokyo offers the reader a rare and privileged perspective, imparting both design and cultural insights.

 Food + the City

Food + the City

$46.37

Food and the City makes the relationships between food and the city visible by exploring both the ways in which buying and eating food have become such a significant part of urban public life, and the ways in which design supports and enhances the place of food in the city. It is timely because the proliferation of urban cafes, restaurants, and markets continues, but is not sufficiently recognized or analyzed. Food related topics are now of great interest in academic and design disciplines but the theme of this issue, food as it relates to the variety and vitality of urban life, has not been addressed. Food and the City, will develop ideas from the popular Food and Architecture (2002). Gateway to Japan

Gateway to Japan

$191.24

When friends want to know where to go in Japan, I always ask, What are you interested in? One friend spent every day at the Kabuki theater in Tokyo. Another ventured north to savor the culinary traditions of Tohoku. We know people who adore Tokyo, exulting in the energy of the world’s mostfuturistic megapolis. Others loath it and flee to tranquil Kyoto, the former imperial city that epitomizes the refinement of traditional culture. Still others visit both cities and marvel at the extremes represented by these opposing poles of the Japanese experience. The diversity of cultural andgeographic offerings can be intimidating. The two sections of this hook, History and Culture and Japan by Region, are designed to make them more manageable. History and Culture focuses on specific topics and recommends where to go. Japan by Region gives the practical information you need to make thetrip. History and Culture A Brief History introduces the major historical periods and includes a list of the most important figures in Japanese history and culture; their names appear in uppercase letters throughout the book. The chapters that follow provide both an overview and a practical reference on various subjects. For example, Cuisine contains bilingual menus from which you can order food in restaurants. Most of the chapters conclude with a list of recommendations. Any place that is mentioned in both the main text and the list appears in uppercase. Japan by Region The ten regional chapters appear in geographic order, from north to south (see map on p. vi). The largest of Japan’s four main islands, Honshu, and the smallest, Shikoku, together make up seven chapters. Theremaining three chapters are devoted to Hokkaido, Kyushu, and the Okinawan archipelago. Eachchapter begins with a brief introduction and lists the best attractions, special interests, and seasonal events. Transit DiagramsThe transit diagram at the beginning of each regional ch

 Happy in the Kitchen

Happy in the Kitchen

$45

It’s the passionate professional chef with a compulsion to explore whom we should thank for those extraordinary techniques and ideas that continually find their way into the home kitchen. Whether it’s poaching in plastic or using vegetable waters instead of fat to enrich flavor, or new tricks with the inexpensive Japanese mandoline, professionals expand our horizons. And among his colleagues, Michel Richard is the chef’s chef, the one others look to for inspiration. Why didn’t I think of that? asks Thomas Keller, in his foreword to Happy in the Kitchen, about Richard’s innovative technique. Michel Richard leads the way and always has at his L.A. restaurants, Citrus and Citronelle, and now in Washington, D.C., at Michel Richard Citronelle and his newly opened Central. He never ceases to explore and his food never fails to satisfy. Happy in the Kitchen is teeming with Richard-esque discoveries, whether it’s an amazingly simple technique for dicing vegetables, a delicious low-carb carbonara made with onions rather than pasta, or a schnitzel made of pureed squid. He’s playful always but also a perfectionist and an iconoclast. What can you say about a chef who makes risotto with potatoes, prefers frozen Brussels sprouts, and whips up spectacular chocolate pudding and b chamel in the microwave? A chef who doesn’t shock blanched vegetables in ice water, but uses his freezer as though it were a fifth burner, and turns raspberries and almonds into salami ? Enamored of crispness, this master chef, who calls himself Captain Crunch, makes a potato gratin that is all crust and fries carrots until crisp. Always seeking tosurprise, he stuffs onion shells and serves them as pasta, and he scrambles scallops and serves them as if they were eggs. But the surprise is not just in the form the ingredients take in each dish, but in the taste. Richard offers recipes for the foods we love, but always looks
